Thank You!”   On today’s tour we will pass through different parts of Oaxaca and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a historic region that as we travel through it serves to better understand how the dots of the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica are connected. Oaxaca is not only the bridge between all the cities of the ancient world in this part of the globe, but between the vibrant present it represents and its relationship with centuries of tradition in the past.    Oaxaca and its surroundings are still home to one third of the speakers of indigenous languages in all of Mexico. They preserve the Identity inherited long before the arrival of the European conquerors to these lands and, in many cases, live the reflection of ancient rituals and beliefs in syncretism with CAtholic festivities after 300 years of colonization.      We will make a journey from the present to the past, we will know some of the expressions that will take us little by little to past decades, to the colonial era and the impressive cities that are now archaeological vestiges of the Zapotecs and Mixtecs. As a small sample of the beginning of what is now Oaxaca, we will begin by talking about art.     THE ART   This is Francisco Toledo, the most representative Oaxacan artist in contemporary times, although he recently passed away in 2019. These are some of his paintings, although he was also a sculptor and creator of performances. The message we see in his 60 years of artistic career can be summarized in some of his words:   “I knew the isthmus of Oaxaca when the women bathed naked in the river. The costumes and the fiestas, the markets, the Zapotec spoken everywhere. I was five years old and it was paradise. It was a different Mexico: the Indigenous people were not subjugated and had autonomy.”
